The USS Salem (CA-139) is the second U.S. Navy heavy cruiser of the Des Moines class. Construction began in July 1945, and it was launched in May 1949. Its main gun was equipped with the world's first self-loading device using cased charges, and it was put into service for training exercises and rescue missions mainly in Europe. It was retired in January 1959 without experiencing actual combat, and since October 1944 it has served as a museum ship in Quincy, Massachusetts.
